Art Biennials and Capitals of Culture

05.03.2008

The next get-together in the Kopfstand09 series will examine the impact that art biennials and capital of culture years can have on their host city’s image.

“Art Biennials and Capitals of Culture – Global Players or Regional Developers?” is the title of a talk on the evening of March 21, 2008 with Paul Domela, the chief executive director of the Liverpool Biennale. Among his many accomplishments, Domela was responsible for the City of Manchester’s contribution to the “Shrinking Cities” project, an exemplary investigation of contemporary urban development.
Major events like art biennials and capital of culture years focus attention—on the part of audiences as well as the media. In this context, Paul Domela will scrutinize the influence such events can have on a city’s developmental path.
