Linz is plumbing the depths! Beginning May 30, the OK Center for Contemporary Art and Linz09 will be descending into subterranean Linz to stage an exhibition entitled “Tiefenrausch – Rapture of the Deep.” Some projects have already premiered.

In conjunction with “Tiefenrausch,” the OK is being temporarily transformed into a “Museum of the Underworld” showcasing objects connected with the cultural history of subterranean realms, acoustic impressions, spatial experiences and installations that will also shed light on historical aspects of Linz’s underground tunnels—including their use during World War II. Another venue is the Aktienkeller, a network of underground passageways beneath the Botanical Garden. Projects by international artists will be on display throughout these tunnels, some of which are 6 meters high. Access points leading down into this underworld will be visible on Landstraße in downtown Linz: manhole covers will be turned into artistically designed periscopes that link the city above ground with the enormous system of pipelines, sewers and mains. Guided tours will offer glimpses of this otherwise inaccessible city beneath the city. The itinerary will include the “Tiefenrausch” exhibition spaces, and experts will be on hand to elaborate on historically significant spots and facilities being used commercially.
