Art, culture and the general public: Stanford Professor Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht will first discuss a new academic field of study with his Linzer colleague Herbert Lachmayer, before slipping into the role of football commentator.

What in the world is artistic-scientific competence? Professor Herbert Lachmayer of the Linz Art University’s Department of Graphic Arts and Cultural Studies and Professor Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht from the faculty of prestigious Stanford University in California will be discussing this question at a matinee on June 22.
The occasion for their conversation is the doctoral program entitled “Staging Knowledge and Cultural Mediation as a New Research Practice” that’s being inaugurated by the Linz Art University in Fall 2009, and is also being offered at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and at the Architectural Association London in cooperation with Kings College London and Stanford University.
Later that evening, Gumbrecht, a literary scholar, will venture into rather unfamiliar territory and provide the color commentary during a live broadcast of the Euro 2008 quarterfinal match between Spain and Italy on Arenaplatz in front of the OK. He’ll thus follow up his matinee with an exemplary blend of science and athletic-aesthetic reality.
