One of the two European Capitals of Culture 2013 has now been chosen: Kosice, Slovakia’s second largest city, has been able to outdistance its three competitors.

It was, among other things, Kosice’s thriving theatrical scene that made the EU Commission’s jury decide in its favour and against its Slovak rivals, Prsov, Martin and Nitra. 2013 will see the first Slovak European Capital of Culture.
Kosice will share the title with an as yet undisclosed city in France. Which of the four candidates – Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Marseille – will be twinned with Kosice will be disclosed at the EU Commission’s press conference on 16 September.
