Advent high above the city: “Tower Music” and the start of the “Tower Hermit” project revive old traditions and create a space for quiet contemplation.

A tradition that lapsed about 150 years ago is being revived for Advent08. Trumpet fanfares will ring out daily from the steeple of the City Parish Church in conjunction with the Tower Music project being launched on November 29. The musical messengers are students at Musikschule Linz. And every Sunday throughout the Capital of Culture year, undergrads and faculty members at Anton Bruckner Private University will perform one of the clarinet duets by Linz Baroque composer Romanus Weichlein.
Another of Linz09’s church-centered projects is the Tower Hermit. On November 29, the first contemplative recluse will occupy his quarters in the tower of St. Mary’s Cathedral to spend a week amidst silence and asceticism. This voluntary act of renunciation is meant to create a setting for a search for meaning and a process of envisioning the way this person wants to live his/her life. They will set down their reflections in a diary that will be passed on from hermit to hermit at the weekly succession ceremony. A daily gathering entitled “Keeping silent with the hermit” is intended to let others come into personal contact with the hermitage experience.
