Every European Capital of Culture must, first of all, come to terms with itself. Of necessity, because that city wants to know—indeed, has to know—how to define itself. Insight into its identity is a prerequisite for planning and initiatives that bear fruit in the future. Just such a depiction of this city’s identity is provided by LINZ ATLAS. Its recent publication offers an excellent occasion for a discussion of the quality of life in Linz and elsewhere.

LINZ ATLAS is a portrait of Linz. Its core approach is a process of comparison, of establishing relationships among diverse statistical data. The profile that emerges reveals strengths and weaknesses, and positions Linz in an overall European context. At the same time, it calls forth interpretations. What concrete realities characterize the quality of everyday life in Linz, and why is this so? LINZ ATLAS author Peter Arlt, City Councilman Klaus Luger and Linz09 Artistic Director Martin Heller will discuss these issues on December 18.
