Linz long had a reputation as a city that you just passed through, not a place where you spent time sightseeing. But many famous travelers have indeed paid a call on Linz. Literary evidence to this effect has been amassed into an exhibition entitled “Just Passing Through” that opens April 29 in StifterHaus.

Travel accounts, letters, commentaries and notes of observers’ impressions of Linz have been collected for this exhibition. Their authors include Lady Mary Montagu, Johann Nestroy, Franz Grillparzer, Thomas Mann, Mark Twain, Robert Musil, Alfred Polgar and Helmut Qualtinger. The result is a very colorful literary portrait made up of verdicts on and prejudices about the city astride the Danube. The exhibition runs until November 12, 2009.
