Phileas Fogg needed almost three months to circumnavigate the globe in Jules Verne’s classic “Around the World in 80 Days.” Now, just such a journey is departing from Linz. But this one will be utilizing fiber optic cable and satellite links to get from place to place …

“80+1 – A Trip around the World” is a joint production of Ars Electronica, voestalpine and Linz09. This virtual excursion will visit 20 locations emblematic of themes of tremendous relevance to our future: climate change, migration, energy, food, identity, growth and traffic. Serving as the expedition’s base camp and the hub of its worldwide network is a visionary piece of architecture now going up on Linz’s Main Square. Live remote hook-ups, presentations of projects being carried out in cooperation with other cities, scientific forums, interventions, actions and exhibitions - “80+1 - A Trip around the World” will be offering an incredibly diverse lineup of events for 80 days beginning on June 17. For instance, you’ll be able to take a taxi ride through Jerusalem or shake hands with someone in Bangalore, India. On the 81st day, this ambitious project will culminate with a conference featuring prominent international experts within the framework of the Ars Electronica Festival.
