In the late Middle Ages the Salzstadl served as a place for the storage of salt. The Donauschule, a Linz artists’ association, and its mentor Paul Fischnaller have assigned a new and different purpose to the building. They have put a great deal of effort into restoring part of the Salzamt building over the last few years to make it fit for provisional use and have installed a printing workshop and artists’ studios. Linz took note of this initiative and purchased the building to ensure it would remain dedicated to cultural purposes in the long term. SALZSTADL will become a platform for an artist-in-residence programme. The studios are available to artists from around the world as well as artists from the region and will serve as their base and as workshops for their creative work. Artists are also eligible to make public presentations and exhibitions and for bursaries. In addition to this SALZSTADL will contribute to artists’ exchange programmes with partner cities.
