The Akustikon is the culmination and platform of Hörstadt/Acoustic City. Just a stone’s throw away from the Main Square of Linz, a world opens up in the Akustikon inciting sensually pleasurable and insightful hearing. In the small but carefully arranged space of three hundred square meters you can experience the sounds of the planets in the universe, the noises of the city, acoustic illusions and the most diverse acoustic effects - a superb audio adventure for young and old.
The audio experiences are provided by two Polyphons that hold, similar to an old apothecary cupboard, a sound in each drawer, by ear trumpets that lead from the city into the Akustikon, and audio stations called Auditons. The Akustikon is based on a monomedia principle. This means that sounds and other effects are purposely not illustrated. And there are no headphones, so that the ears can remain free.
Beyond sound exhibitions, the Akustikon is also a site of research and education. The house is based on an idea: the idea that human beings are touched most deeply by what we hear. And for this reason, what and how we hear cannot be insignificant. In keeping with Audible City, the Akustikon advocates an acoustic environment that is appropriate for human beings and in keeping with human dignity. A network from the Akustikon team and associated forces engages with the social and political significance of hearing and the audible.
With its background of ideas and in cooperation with selected specialists, the Akustikon prepares acoustic expert opinions for construction, urban planning and traffic planning, as well as acoustic designs for inside and outside areas in keeping with human dignity.
