An account doesn’t necessarily involve numbers. Hubert von Goisern provided graphic proof of that in summing up the first leg of the Linz Europa Tour 2007-2009.

The facts & figures are already a matter of record: two and a half months, seven linguistic zones, 10 countries, 23 concerts, 12,000 kilometers. It was the real-life story behind the numbers that Hubert von Goisern related to Martin Heller and 250 rapt guests. Their response: many smiles and a lot of applause. The musician spoke of the slowness of going by ship, an experience that puts the traveler into a rhythm all its own. Of a storm that almost scuttled the whole tour. Of skepticism and the lack of local support. Of a concert that had to be relocated on short notice from the quay in front of an expensive hotel to a public beach. And of the frequent interpersonal encounters that transcended the boundaries separating countries, languages and musical genres.
Hubert von Goisern also brought along a film: a trailer for an ORF production planned for broadcast in spring 2008. And he came with a message too: “Have no fear!”. After all, he was on the go this summer as roving ambassador of the Capital of Culture in order to contribute to people “developing a feeling for how big and how colorful and how unique this Europe is.” And, at least on this evening, that’s exactly what he accomplished.
