Jenseits von Geschichte / Beyond History

Jenseits von Geschichte / Beyond History
04.04.2008

The Nazi Era has left an indelible mark on the history of Linz, the city that was once even called "City of the Führer". What aspects and elements beyond the realm of scholarly historiography can serve as the basis of a process of coming to terms with such a past? Participants at the “Beyond History” symposium will discuss this issue.

The process of dealing with the Nazi past is about to undergo a fundamental transition. Contemporary eyewitnesses to what went on then are taking their leave from the historical stage; at the same time, no period has been more comprehensively documented and researched than the Nazi Era. The “Beyond History” symposium aims to shed light on National Socialism in Linz not only from the perspective of professional historians; experts in other fields such as film, architecture, tourism and medicine will also contribute their points of view. The proceeding will begin with a speech by Member of the European Parliament Daniel Cohn-Bendit, who will discuss the active role that political policymaking can play today in the process of coming to terms with the past.
