Contemporary Lithuanian literature occupies the focal point of the “Linz Reads Vilnius” event series. Kicking things off will be Lithuanian author Vanda Juknaitė, who will be joined on this literary excursion by Austrian writer Barbara Frischmuth.

Barbara Frischmuth’s latest novel, “Vergiss Ägypten” (Forget Egypt), deals with the encounter of the Orient and the Occident and the discovery of the self. The world-renowned Austrian writer will read from her work on September 18, 2008 in the StifterHaus and, in so doing, launch Linz09’s “Linz Reads Vilnius” series.
Vilnius will be represented by Vanda Juknaitė, one of Lithuania’s most famous authors and the recipient of numerous literary prizes. She’ll read from her novel “Tariamas ið tamsos” (Spoken From the Dark).
Following their presentations, the two authors will engage in a discussion. Cornelius Hell, literary critic and author, will serve as moderator.
Vilnius and Linz will be sharing next year's European Capital of Culture title. “Linz Reads Vilnius” focuses on differences between the two cities and what they have in common, and seeks to offer a lively look into Lithuania’s everyday life, lifestyle and way of life. This should prove to be a fascinating journey of discovery, especially for those who know how to read between the lines.
