Languages from all over the world are written and spoken in Linz. Beginning December 18, 2009, multilingual signs set up by the COMING AND GOING project will be extending best wishes to travellers entering and leaving Linz on the city’s major thoroughfares.

December 18 is International Migrants Day. An important date, and an appropriate occasion for the launch of Linz09’s COMING AND GOING project. Supplementary city limits signs are being set up along Linz’s highest-volume access routes. They’ll feature the word “Linz” spelled out in foreign characters: Chinese, Sinhalese, Greek, Armenian or Laotian, for instance. All of the alphabets used on these signs are employed in one or more languages spoken by people living in Linz. These are signs of linguistic diversity and cultural pluralism, as well as a signal that the Capital of Culture embraces outside influences.
