Following exhibitions at biennials in Istanbul, Venice and Berlin, renowned artist Kutlug Ataman puts his great creativity on display in Europe’s 2009 Capital of Culture. The Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz is dedicating a major solo exhibition to his artwork’s social criticism.

The rift between what is “ones own” and what is “foreign,” and the conflicts triggered by tradition and convention, belief and conviction are the central themes that run like a thread through Kutlug Ataman’s films, videos and photographs. This exhibition focuses on the tensions between Eastern and Western values in Turkey, the artist’s homeland, and that poses questions having to do with Europe’s geographic, cultural, conceptual and ideological borders.
