The name Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec evokes images of Paris nightlife at the turn of the 20th century. Perhaps his famous Moulin Rouge posters come to mind. That the artist’s work had many other facets too will be brought out by “Toulouse-LautrecLandesgalerie Linz beginning February 28.

Just as the title says, this will be a more penetrating consideration of Toulouse-Lautrec, one that presents him as a sensitive observer of life, society and the human psyche, an artist who portrayed his contemporaries amidst their high-tension interactions at the nexus of the public and private spheres. But the painter was no mere spectator—his works of art also reflect his personal issues that include his descent from one of France’s oldest aristocratic families and his extremely short stature that was due to a congenital disorder. The exhibition at Landesgalerie Linz will include approximately 70 works complemented by historical photographs.
