Burhan Öçal provides a musical lead-in to the most extensive part of Extra Europa—a cultural festival running from March to early May. Plus, there’ll be additional projects in the spirit of Extra Europa throughout the remainder of the Capital of Culture year.

Theater, exhibitions, music, installations, readings, films, dialog—these are the general categories subsuming the wide-ranging presentations on the Extra Europa cultural lineup. The festival will showcase one thing above all: the great cultural diversity on hand in Norway, Switzerland and Turkey. For example, “Love Story Superman” by Swiss artist Massimo Furlan: this dream-like story that amuses without the use of words is an account of Superman and the dream of flying.
A totally different story is “The Singing Walls” by Norwegian composer Magnar Åm. Twelve mini-concerts will be staged on four days in the architecturally superb setting of the Rudigierhalle in the Cathedral. Övül and Mustafa Avkiran’s company 10+ is one of today’s leading lights in Turkish dance and performance art. Their piece “Parallel” was developed expressly for Linz09. As the first part of a long-term research project on cultures, languages, borders and religions, this performance staged by an ensemble of immigrants to Linz will make its world premiere at the end of March.
