Continuities and discontinuities in cultural policymaking with respect to music in Linz and the surrounding region before and after 1945 will occupy the focal point at “The Sound of Power” March 20-21. The conference agenda also includes two concerts featuring works by composers the Nazis classified as degenerate and subjected to racial persecution.

Linz—as the first major Austrian city to do so—has confronted its Nazi past in a comprehensive, unsparing and exemplary manner. What has largely been missing to date is an examination of the city’s musical life during that time.
In coordination with “The Führer’s Capital of Culture” exhibition and under the scholarly direction of the University of Linz’s Department of Contemporary History, this symposium will investigate the restitution of cultural assets, the thinking behind Allied cultural policymaking following the Third Reich’s collapse and personnel continuities during and after the Nazi era. A critical eye will also be cast on the history of the Anton Bruckner Private University.

Tickets for both dates can be ordered via Ö-Ticket.
