Linz09’s Zündstoff school theater festival April 15-18 will be staging productions that inflame, provoke and cause excitement. The sparks leap and spread; school drama groups in the region and international youth theater companies catch them on the wind and fan them into flames.

No other type of school project mobilizes as much commitment and creates the level of enthusiasm that drama does. Plays can provide young people with an effective way to articulate what they need to get across. The themes of these dramas are often of tremendous current relevance and involve profound social criticism.
The Zündstoff program that’s been lined up for the Capital of Culture year includes two guest productions from regions in which social and political facts and circumstances make for a difficult living situation. A theater group from Johannesburg gives an account of life on the streets, and a dance ensemble with a small chorus from the AIDA refugee camp in Palestine portrays that land’s problems. Students in Upper Austrian schools are also focusing on issues of great current importance: the loss of someone very close to you, problems faced by immigrants, shooting sprees in public schools, and the widening gap between rich and poor. Zündstoff isn’t just for kids. Adults who appreciate intense theater experiences will get their fill here too.
