Linz09 and Crossing Europe Showcases the Rich Diversity of European Cinema

Crossing Europe
22.04.2009

The Crossing Europe Film Festival presents fresh, young European auteur filmmaking. This year's program staged in cooperation with Linz09 includes 177 selected feature films, documentaries and shorts from all over this continent.

Crossing Europe gets underway on April 20th with the Austrian premiere of “Home.” The latest work by “Tribute” director Ursula Meier is a social farce about a family’s anarchic life lived out beside an expressway. Additional opening day highlights are the world premiere of “Muezzin” produced by Upper Austrian filmmaker Sebastian Brameshuber, a screening of “Alle anderen,” an interpersonal drama that was honored with two Silver Bears at the Berlinale, and “JCVD,” an homage to Belgian martial arts legend Jean-Claude van Damme. This lineup of four outstanding films presented on the first day of the festival is meant to exemplify the great diversity of contemporary European filmmaking.
Eleven of the 177 films on the festival program are competing for the €10,000 grand prize in the Crossing Europe competition. One segment of this year's lineup has been curated in conjunction with Linz09’s Extra Europa project that’s featuring films, events, performances and live musical acts from three non-EU-member states: Turkey, Switzerland and Norway.
