A Brauhaus is a place where things get brewed up. And that’s exactly what’s happening in Linz, though this entails no malt or hops. Here, a wide array of interesting ingredients are being combined to create a 21st-century folk culture blend.

In Alpine Europe, the concept of folk culture is virtually tantamount to convention and tradition. Nevertheless, it’s certainly conceivable that traditional roots can be reinterpreted—and at the outset of the Third Millennium, this might even be seen as a necessity! Beginning on August 26, “Brauhaus” will be bringing together everything that’s connected with folk culture: fashion and music, architecture and food. And will be doing so in a way that puts things in a new light. Dancing a waltz to electronic music, for instance, or showcasing native costumes updated by young designers. The lineup also includes “regulars’ table” talks about theoretical aspects of folk culture and interesting glimpses at what folk culture means in other European lands. The hub of this undertaking is a “temporary pub” in which elements and characteristics of an old-fashioned Austrian tavern have been given an innovative makeover.
