Philip Glass is one of the most important composers of our time. He has numerous ties to Linz, where several of his works have premiered over the years. To mark the Capital of Culture year, Glass has composed an opera entitled “Kepler” about the great astronomer and mathematician.

“Without true knowledge, life is dead” is the credo attributed to Johannes Kepler. This great man of science is now the subject of a commissioned work by famed American composer Philip Glass. But “Kepler” doesn’t focus solely on the eponymous protagonist’s biography; rather, it’s an intensive encounter with the forces that determined the course of that life: Counterreformation and upheaval, religious conflicts and wars, religion and science. This opera carries on the long-term collaborative relationship between Philip Glass and conductor Dennis Russell Davies. The libretto is the work of Austrian dramatist Martina Winkel. Landestheater Linz hosts the world premiere on September 20th.
