“God” is the theme of the second edition of Festival 4020 to be staged during the Capital of Culture year. “Song” kicked things off last spring. But the continuation is by no means an encounter with sacred music; rather, it’s an inquiry into what’s behind it, into what God is.

The question of what God signifies has always entailed the elementary facts & circumstances of human life, the outer limits of the human experience, and the boundedness and transience inherent in human existence. Conclusively answering this question far exceeds human capabilities; accordingly, it must remain unresolved. Nevertheless, in struggling with these issues over the millennia, human beings have derived food for though and the stuff that visions are made of from music. The festival’s program spans recent centuries: from Renaissance liturgical songs of grief to works of Modernism. The lineup includes internationally renowned musicians and ensembles as well as regional artists.
