Kasper, Kasperl, Mr. Punch, Pulcinella, Vitéz Lázló, Guignol, Don Cristobal—in lots of languages and many lands, he’s the one and only entertainer who’s been delighting kids for centuries! Now, Linz09 is dedicating an entire festival to this cheeky little theatrical headbanger.
Linz09 has commissioned four theater groups and theatrical producers to stage a Punch & Judy Show for the Capital of Culture: maschek camouflages Kasperl amongst protagonists we’re familiar with from TV; Guyla Molnàr sends our hero into the underworld to rescue his granny; Hans-Jochen Menzel gets the girls into the act; and Neville Tranter deploys Mr. Punch in Afghanistan. These are the featured attractions of an 11-day festival entitled THAT’S THE WAY TO DO IT! A PROPER PUNCH & JUDY SHOW. The lineup is being supplemented by pieces that dispense with scrutiny of what is purportedly kiddie entertainment and instead show how the light of political and social criticism can be shed on Kasperl and his signature repertoire of gleeful aggression, thrashings and anarchy.
