Women in Times of Peril

Maria Stuart
03.12.2009

Following Linz09’s world premiere last June of the play JOAN DARK based on Schiller’s “The Maid of Orleans,” young director Aida Karic now presents her take on another work by the great German writer: Schiller’s MARY STUART.

Women, power and religion are the themes that Aida Karic has confronted in her latest directorial efforts. Born in Serbia in 1974, Karic worked at numerous theatrical venues including Vienna’s Schauspielhaus before being commissioned by Linz09 to produce her two Schiller interpretations for the Capital of Culture program. Here, Mary Queen of Scots and Elisabeth I of England are opponents vying for the British throne. What courses do these two women take through the treacherous turf of power struggles, looming violence and religious discord? Aida Karic’s interpretation of Schiller’s play examines the question of whether women are even in a position to master such situations and to maintain order amidst such a complex power structure. The original text was adapted by Finnish dramatist Laura Ruohonen; her textual treatment blends together with Karic’s highly individualistic mise-en-scène to engender a powerfully visual, musical approach to this classic work.
