Multilingual Linz – Translations Online

14.03.2007

A new online databank lets the Linz business community get geared up linguistically as part of the preparations for the many international guests who will be visiting during the Capital of Culture year.

The www.meinkunde.at, (my customer) website is constantly being expanded. It lets users look up general terms having to do with subjects like money and transportation, as well as specialized expressions useful in restaurants, hotels and leisure activities in nine foreign languages. The work on expanding the available offerings has already made considerable progress. For instance, inputting the term Knödel—dumpling, a mainstay of Austrian cuisine—produces a list of 45 variations, which can then be rendered in English, French, Spanish, Italian, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Polish and Russian. All translations can then be copied directly into documents created in word processing programs, which makes it really easy to produce foreign-language menus and employee training materials.

This website was produced by the Chamber of Commerce of Upper Austria’s Translation Taskforce and the Linz-City District Headquarters in cooperation with the Restaurateur and Innkeeper Sections of the Chambers of Commerce of Upper Austria and Lower Austria.
