Liverpool says “Cheers!” to Linz as Europe’s New Capital of Culture

Liverpool staged quite a festive European Capital of Culture “changing of the guard” ceremony. 35,000 well-wishers turned out for the grand finale of the English metropolis’ one-year reign and to welcome Linz as their worthy successor.
A spectacular fireworks display above the Mersey River concluded the Capital of Culture year in Liverpool. Ulrich Fuchs, deputy artistic director of Linz09, was on hand to officially accept the honor from the Liverpool ’08 organizers.The European Capital of Culture year was a complete success for Liverpool. Among the highlights were the ceremony at which Britain’s prestigious Turner Prize for art was handed out, the MTV Europe Music Awards, and a concert starring Sir Paul McCartney.
