YES09 – Essen Takes the Finale

There was lots of action on local football pitches over the long Whitsuntide weekend. Ten sides representing Linz’s sister cities battled it out for the coveted YES09 title and show-cased their impressing playing skills.
In a real nail-biter of a final, Essen edged out Albufeira in a penalty shootout. Not even support from a squad of Viennese girls could lead the Portuguese to victory. The boys from Essen won the first period; in the second period, the girls from Vienna put Albufeira in the lead. But play between mixed squads in the third period ended with the match deadlocked, and the penalty shootout put the kids from Europe’s 2010 Capital of Culture on top.In the consolation match for third place, kickers from host city Linz bested their counterparts from co-Capital of Culture Vilnius. All in all, it was a great tournament in which enthusiastic young male and female athletes displayed their talents and their sportsmanship.
We wish all the participating teams a pleasant journey home and - as for all the little bruises that result when passionate players give their all - a quick recovery!!!
