Press Release
Friday 20 March 2009

Following yesterday’s official opening ceremony at the Altes Rathaus, the two-day EXTRA EUROPA symposium in Linz’s Wissensturm was opened today by Austrian President Heinz Fischer, Swiss Federal Councilman Pascal Couchepin, Upper Austria’s Governor Josef Pühringer, Richard Kühnel as head of representation of the European Commission in Austria, Linz09 Artistic Director Martin Heller, the ambassadors Selim Yenel (TR) and Bengt O. Johansen (NOR) and local political leaders.

The focus of attention at EXTRA EUROPA is on three EU non-member states: Norway, Switzerland and Turkey. Symposium attendees will discuss European identity and culture as well as security and economic issues. In addition to the symposium, there will be 50 events showcasing the three countries’ arts and cultures.

A highlight of the weekend entertainment lineup is a concert by Turkish musician Burhan Öcal and his Istanbul Oriental Ensemble on March 21 at 8 PM in Hafenhalle09 at Industriezeile 41a (ticket reservations: 0664 82 83 860).
