Press conference 8th April 2008, 11.30 a.m.
Auditorium Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz

Often, the step leading from impossible to possible seems to be obvious and easy but is nevertheless associated with anxiety, doubt and insecurities. Once that step is taken, though, the outcome is usually something wonderful and unforgettable.

Linz 2009 European Capital of Culture is launching a very special school of the performing arts under the artistic directorship of international theatrical producer David Maayan: the Academy of the Impossible. Anyone who wants to give the performing arts a try will have the chance to do so via an active learning process: expanding their knowledge, honing their skills and breaking through their limits. Thoughts like “I’m untalented.” – “That’s not for me.” – “I can’t sing.” – “I can’t act.” – “I can’t tell stories.” – “I’m too shy.” – “I’d never be able to do that.” – or even “I’m too old.” should not prevent people from taking the plunge. The only preconditions for participating in the Academy of the Impossible are the readiness to expand ones own horizons and the desire to make the seemingly unattainable come true. Our motto: “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

Offerings include introductory courses, workshops and master classes featuring skilled and experienced instructors. Participants will have the opportunity to redefine their capabilities and acquire practical, realistic instruments in order to take an individual approach to exceeding their personal limits. Moreover, the Academy of the Impossible is meant to function as a forum for comprehensive exchanges of experience and information among the participants themselves.

Serving as the Academy’s “campus” are unconventional and “impossible” locations like streets, stores, historical places and public squares in and around Linz. Here, participants will get practical experience in exercises played out before “impossible”—in the sense of random—audiences. For instance, visitors to an exhibition in a museum might happen upon Academy attendees in action.

The Academy of the Impossible opens on July 14, 2008; the first block of offerings will be held in July and August.

Each participant in this summer session can put together an individualized program. Some activities are free of charge.
First off, in summer 2008, a 10-day theater course will be offered in conjunction with the Stiftung Talente foundation’s Summer Academy in Bad Leonfelden.
