Linz 2009 European Capital of Culture has been invited to stage the traditional midnight entertainment program at the Viennese Opera Ball on Thursday, February 19, 2009.

The program is entitled “Alive and Kicking! A Celebration.” Ida Kelarova and members of the cast of “Purimspil” will sing a selection of Yiddish and Romany song’s from the play that will be making its world premiere on March 11, 2009 in Linz. The lyrics are by Joshua Sobol; Ida Kelarova wrote the music herself.

As for the content—The pre-Lent carnival season celebrated by Catholics has a Jewish counterpart: the festival of Purim. What they have in common is enabling human beings to overcome their fears through an extremely exuberant celebration of life, whereby the dividing line between good and evil, day and night, and theater and reality begin to get a bit blurred.
Not only taverns but in synagogues, schools and out in the streets, people get rowdy, imbibe to excess, party hard and blow off some steam. And who in the world is better qualified than legendary, internationally celebrated Romany songstress Ida Kelarova to put these intense emotions to music?

Linz09 will be represented at Vienna’s Opera Ball by Airan Berg, Linz09’s artistic director of the performing arts, and David Maayan, producer and director of “Purimspil.”

“Purimspil” Ensemble:
Actors / Singers: Angelika Kisser-Maayan, Melita Jurisic, Maxi Blaha, Rafael Goldwaser, David Wurawa, Daniel Keberle
Music: Ida Kelarova, Desiderius Dužda, Tomas Kačo, Julian Tempfer
