The Fifth Time Around, But Like Never Before!

The Upper Austrian young people’s theater scene is a colorfully diverse one that’s been very active for many years. And this alone is reason enough to give these young dramatic movers and shakers the opportunity they so very richly deserve to present their productions to the largest possible audiences. The school theater week entitled ZÜNDSTOFF (Explosive Material), a joint production of Landestheater Linz, Theater Phönix, Theater des Kindes and the ZÜNDSTOFF Association, is a very well conceived way to go about this.
A jury of experts selected 11 school theater groups for this year's fifth festival. For the first time, they’ll all spend the entire festival run in Linz to enable them to get to know one another, interact, and attend multi-day workshops led by top-name instructors that will give these young artists insights into new forms of theatrical performance and thereby impart to them some creative stimulus for their own future productions. The 11 selected groups represent a cross-section of what’s happening now at theaters in Upper Austrian schools and recreational facilities. Collaboration with Linz09 is making it possible to augment and complement these 11 groups with two international companies: Market Theatre from Alexandria Township near Johannesburg, South Africa and the Alrowwad Theatre and Dance Group from Palestine. One of the highlights of this year's very diverse and extensive lineup is a production of Georg Staudacher and Volker Schmidt’s Nestroy-winning play “komA” by students at Fadingerstraße High School.
