Neue Heimat on the south side of Linz will be presenting its most colorful side in July 2009 when, following Alte Innenstadt, Kleinmünchen/Auwiesen, Dornach-Auhof/Katzbach, Neue Innenstadt/Froschberg and Bindermichl/Spallerhof/Keferfeld-Oed, it takes over as Capital of Culture Neighborhood of the Month. Two artists, a youth center, an elementary school, day-care center and kindergarten, a parish, the East African community, neighborhood businesspeople and local residents have formed a synergetic coalition to stage a series of events designed to appeal to visitors from all over town and far beyond!
The concept behind “Waschkultur09 – A Neighborhood Does a Load of Multi-colored Laundry” is that doing the laundry is a global cultural theme that connects neighborhood residents of different ethnic backgrounds. “Creating awareness of a universally familiar activity and getting it across in terms of an artistic form of representation is meant to bring out what people everywhere have in common and to create a sense of identification,” is how artists Karin Wimmer and Ingrid Feichtinger explained their project, which will be running throughout July 2009 in and around Haidgatternpark.
