Brucknerfest 09

In the Capital of Culture year, the Bruckner Festival once again demonstrated what it means to be “classically different.” The inevitable and so-frequently-cited interplay between image and sound took center stage.

In “Image and Music,” the festival hosted an up-close encounter with the interplay between the auditory and the visual, thereby following in the conceptual footsteps of Theodor W. Adorno. The Brucknerhaus has always paid special attention to this theme and has provided ample opportunities for its visitors to experience it. The very first Linzer Klangwolke (Cloud of Sound) in 1979 showcased this close “audio-visual” partnership in a live performance, and the fascination with this theme is just as alive today as it was back then. In recent years, collaboration with the Ars Electronica Futurelab has made it possible to take this endeavor to the next level. Spectacular performances such as 3D productions of Richard Wagner’s “Rheingold” and Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” have garnered international acclaim. In 2009, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz with Dennis Russell Davies performed Haydn’s “The Creation” to kick off a Bruckner Festival full of highlights—for instance, concerts by the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta.
