New music for sacred spaces

The SONUS LOCI (Latin: sonus, sound; locus, place) musical project fulfilled a vision composer-sound artist Klaus Hollinetz had had in mind for years: to pervade a wide array of ecclesiastical spaces in Linz with live electro-acoustic music whose temporal and spatial dimensions go far beyond the conventional and span a wide-ranging musical arc using the parameters of space and time with all their manifold aspects.
In SONUS LOCI, Hollinetz took an uncompromising approach to making his dream a reality. Simplicity and clarity formed the preconditions of each individual concert; light was the only additional design medium. For SONUS LOCI, there were two central determinative aspects inherent in the use of ecclesiastical spaces as performance venues: on one hand, the act of approaching spiritual issues; on the other hand, the manifold levels of significance that emerge from the reciprocal interaction of each space with its respective local, social setting.
Concerning content, the SONUS LOCI art project took a respectful approach to each respective religious community and its faith.

Sonus Loci Aetheris was the project’s culmination. On this evening, the audience partook of a listening experience that pervaded multiple locations and spaces at 10 houses of worship in Linz. Klaus Hollinetz, who developed the idea, concept and composition for this endeavor, interconnected the individual locations so that an electro-acoustic soundtrack could be transmitted via radio in real time and flow into the performances of the musicians and actors. These sounds were, in turn, sent to a radio station and came back transformed via the ether.
