An excursion up to Ulrichsberg amidst the scenic rolling hills northwest of Linz has long been a rewarding experience for fans of contemporary music. Jazzatelier Ulrichsberg has made an international name for itself with innovative festivals. This year's production, PHONOMANIE 9, pays homage to jazz musician Paul Lovens.

The ULRICHSBERGER KALEIDOPHON Festival is an annual fixture in May. The 2009 edition was a part of the Capital of Culture lineup. In addition to this thematically elaborate celebration of contemporary music, Ulrichsberg also regularly hosts PHONOMANIE, a smaller-scale encounter with a particular topic or the artistry of a single musician. This year’s three-day conclave is set for early December and showcases German jazz drummer Paul Lovens on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Lovens is one of the founders of the European form of jazz improvisation that developed in the 1960s in response to American free jazz, and he’s a leading light in a music scene that’s come to be known as “free improvisation.” Lovens’ list of recordings now tops 200; his concert tours have taken him to more than 40 countries. At PHONOMANIE 9, Lovens will be sharing the stage with collaborators he’s regularly worked with over the years. The lineup includes Wolfgang Mitterer, Carlos Zingaro, Paul Lytton, Mats Gustafsson, Tobias Delius and Evan Parker.
